Pigs are among the most intelligent and emotionally complex animals on Earth β yet they are also among the most misunderstood and exploited.
π‘ Did You Know?
- π§ Pigs are smarter than dogs β and as intelligent as a 3-year-old child. They can use mirrors, solve puzzles, and remember names.
- π₯ Pigs form close bonds with one another. They show affection, grieve loss, and even sing to their young while nursing.
- π£οΈ They communicate with over 20 different vocalizations, each with distinct meaning β from βIβm hungryβ to βIβm afraid.β
- π€ Pigs dream, just like humans. They also prefer to sleep nose-to-nose with friends and loved ones.
- π§Ό Pigs are incredibly clean animals β when given space, they never soil their living area.
β€οΈ Pigs Feel Pain, Joy, Fear β and Love
Science recognizes pigs as sentient beings, capable of experiencing emotions. They feel fear in slaughterhouses. They suffer when confined in crates. But they also thrive in loving environments β like sanctuaries β where they can roam, root, and simply be pigs.
π The Harsh Reality
Despite their intelligence and sensitivity…
- Over 120 million pigs are killed for food every year in the United States alone
- Most pigs in factory farms live their entire lives indoors, in crates so small they canβt turn around
- Piglets are often mutilated without anesthesia β tail docking, teeth clipping, and castration
- Mother pigs (sows) are repeatedly impregnated and confined in gestation crates, unable to nurse or nuzzle their babies freely
π± What You Can Do:
- Support sanctuaries that rescue pigs from abuse and slaughter
- Consider reducing or eliminating pork from your diet
- Share their stories β compassion starts with awareness
At Smallβs Sanctuary, our mission is to give pigs and other rescued animals the freedom, care, and dignity they deserve. Stay tuned as we work toward building a safe home for them. π
